6:07pm

Accrington Stanley manager James Beattie: “I thought we withstood everything Southend threw at us, we stood up to them well and they didn’t look like scoring from open play.

“Unfortunately a couple of our flair players weren’t at the races and while I’m disappointed we lost the game I’m not disappointed with the performance.

“There was nothing in the game and we created some decent chances in the first half but the game was decided by the penalties that were given in the end.”

6:06pm

Southend United manager Phil Brown: “It’s great for Barney and I was delighted for him to score.

“He came back here last season with a high expectancy level and it didn’t quite happen for him because he had missed a lot of football.

“But he’s had a good pre-season this year, he’s looking leaner, fitter and hungrier and he’s pushing at the door to be starting now.”

“The referee was spot on both times but they went for my team so I guess I’m bound to say that.

“The losing manager will probably doubt them but for me they were both penalties.

"We should've won by more and I think we would've done if we had scored earlier on in the game."

gary 51 says...

I hate managers who look at excuses or critisise the opposing team (ours included) when they lose, example "they wouldn't score in open play" excuse me if a defender fouls a player in the box it is a penalty and if the team score from this it is a goal, end off.
James Beattie another jumped up England failure!
