Will Atkinson - suffering with an eye injury

SOUTHEND United midfielder Will Atkinson is unable to see out of one his eyes and is a doubt for Saturday’s clash with Stevenage.

Atkinson was forced to come off with the injury half an hour in to Tuesday night’s 2-1 defeat against Walsall in the first round of the Capital One Cup.

And he has yet to make a full recovery.

“Will can’t see out of one his eyes at the moment and there’s some internal bleeding going on there which is a concern,” said Atkinson.

“That’s why he had to come off against Walsall and because of what was happening Will actually thought his eye had been closed by the clash.

“It was actually still wide eye open though and we’re going to have to keep on monitoring the situation.

“But the way it is at the moment I think you would have to say he’s a doubt for the weekend.”

Atkinson was surprisingly selected among the substitutes for Blues’ first game of the season at Accrington Stanley.

But he was recalled for the cup clash with Walsall, only to have to come off injured after an incident which also saw him shown a yellow card for the second game in succession.

“I have no idea how Will was booked for what happened but I think the referee was trying to stamp his authority on the game,” said Brown.

“I didn’t agree with one of the early bookings a Walsall player got and then Will gets booked in an incident which results in him having to come off injured.

“It’s a curious one for me but if anyone can come back from this in time for the weekend it’s Will because of the character he is.

“Knowing him he will want to train again today and he will be desperate to make it for Saturday.”
