Phil Brown, Southend United manager: "This game should never have gone to penalties because we had more than enough chances to have won it in 90 minutes.
“But I can’t keep on making excuses anymore and we need to do better in the final third.
"We're just not scoring enough and it's unforgiveable.
"I'm devastated because it was a great chance for us to get back to winning ways.
"We should have won this by six or seven goals."

Great move from Blues for the goal. John White played in Myles Weston down the right hand side. His cross was scuffed by Shaq Coulthirst in to the path of Jack Payne who prodded home from 10 yards.

Mads Ibenfeldt has been recalled at the heart of the back four in place of the suspended Cian Bolger after Adam Thompson failed a late fitness test on a shin injury. Gary Deegan has been handed his Shrimpers debut in midfield, replacing Conor Clifford, while David Worrall comes in for Kevan Hurst. Jack Payne will also line in midfield in place of Ryan Leonard while further forward Shaq Coulthirst has been preferred to Barry Corr. Young goalkeeper Ted Smith was included among the substitutes with his namesake Paul dropping out of the squad.
