SOUTHEND Saxons centre Sam Nash has labelled tomorrow’s clash at Shelford as ‘a must win game’ for his side.

The Saxons were beaten 36-31 by Redruth in the opening day of the National Two South campaign at Warners Bridge last weekend.

And Nash, who was among Southend’s try scorers, is now demanding a strong reaction to the defeat.

“This week’s game is must win for us because we need to register our first win early, not only to keep up with the leaders but to build confidence within the squad,” said the 25-year-old.

“A win against Shelford away will definitely build belief.

“But Shelford are always a tough side, they have a huge pack, so are forwards are in for a big game.”

Shelford were also beaten on the opening day, losing 16-12 at Lydney.

The Cambridge based club will therefore be bidding to get back to winning ways against the Saxons.

And Nash feels Southend must improve on their display against Redruth if they are to stop that happening.

“It was a tough start to the season, and to be honest, we did not perform,” said Nash.

“Silly errors on our part gifted Redruth the game.

“However as a group are not too worried.

“We have a quality squad and I know we will be among the top sides this season.”

Nash is also eager to help make that happen.

The New Zealander was pleased to open his try scoring against for the season last Saturday and is now aiming to beat the 12 he got last term.

“It was great to get on the score-sheet on my first game back and I hope to cross the line a lot more this season,” said Nash.

“We hope to be in the top half of the table and I have been impressed with the depth of the squad and the competition for starting spots.

“That will bring out the best in us and, if we are consistent, I have no doubt we will improve on our eighth place finish from last year.”

Southend’s new signing, full-back Ian Meads, has gone straight in to the squad for tomorrow’s game but the Saxons are still missing a number of key players.

Back row Sam Fombo (knee), winger Danny Cleare (knee) and centre Sonny Gay (shoulder) are all still out injured and back rows David Jackson (hip) and Daniel Legge (dislocated shoulder) have now both joined them on the sidelines.
