SOUTHEND United striker Barry Corr overcame a crisis in confidence to fire the Shrimpers back to winning ways with a 2-0 triumph against Portsmouth on Saturday.

Corr headed home his first goal of the season before Shaq Coulthirst completed the scoring late on at Roots Hall to end a run of five games without a win for Phil Brown’s side.

And Corr was delighted to work his way back on to the score-sheet after a nine match barren spell.

“I did doubt whether or not the goal would come to be honest,” said the Irishman.

“I’ve been trying to find my form and I’ve felt under pressure on the pitch.

“My confidence is down but I’ve had a lot of support from my family back home.

“They told me to keep on working hard like I always do and thankfully a chance came my way this time that I was able to put away.”

Corr headed home from close range after Kevan Hurst’s left wing corner had rebounded in to his path towards the start of the second half.

And the striker now hopes he can start to hit the back of the net on a more regular basis.

“Once you score you start to feel more confident again and hopefully a few more will come now,” said Corr, 29.

“It had been a while and I had been a bit down. I had been trying to find some form so to score again feels great.

“I’ve scored 49 goals for the club now so I don’t think I have anything to prove.

“But it was an important goal and it feels brilliant to have got the three points so the whole team are delighted.”

Corr’s clinical header helped the Shrimpers get back on track after an indifferent run of results.

However, the striker felt Blues had not suffered a dip in form.

“A lot of people have been saying it’s been a bad start for us but I don’t think we’ve been playing badly,” said Corr.

“In a lot of games we’ve played quite well but hopefully this win can kick start the season for us.”

Saturday’s victory, which pushed Southend back up to eighth in the League Two standings, was watched by a crowd of more than 7,000 fans.

And the match also increased Corr’s desire to achieve promotion this season.

“If we were to get promotion and went up there would be even more games like this for us,” said the striker.

“That’s our aim and we want to keep it going at Cheltenham tomorrow night now.

“It’s a difficult place to go but we’ve got three points here and hopefully that’s the confidence booster we needed.”
