JAMIE Butler says he cannot wait to make an impression on England C after being called-up – although he didn’t find out he had been selected until a mate text him!

The Concord Rangers stopper will now attend a two-day training camp at the England National side’s base at St George’s Park next weekend.

England C manager Paul Fairclough decided to give him a chance after a number of impressive performance for the Beachboys.

Butler said he was hopeful of being recognised, although he admitted he had no idea he was part of the 22-man squad, until he was told by a friend from his old club, Met Police.

“I knew there was a possibility of being noticed,” said Butler. “But it came out of the blue.

“A mate from my Met Police days sent me a text saying ‘well done on the call-up’ and I just said ‘er...what?’ “So he sent me a photo of the list and I was on it. I didn’t have a clue!

“It is massive for me. I am just looking forward to it and will put everything in it to show them they made the right choice.”

Butler says he knows the other keeper in the squad, Dover Athletic’s Mitch Walker, but will be doing all he can to get on the plane to Turkey, for England C’s International Challenge Trophy match next month. They then play Estonia a month later.

“I know Mitch has already been in a couple of squads but I just want to go and do my own thing,” said the Concord stopper. “Hopefully that will be enough.”

And Butler was full of praise for his manager and team-mates for their support since joining the club at start of last season.

“Moving to Concord gave me a platform,” said Butler. “And I have been able to kick on thanks to the support of those around me.

“I want to thank Danny Cowley as he has played a big part in my development.

“I could have left in the summer but I stayed and a lot of that was down to Dan.

“It was the right choice for me and, I am sure there will be other lads from Concord after me.”

Butler found out he had been selected the day after the Beachboys 4-2 win over Wealdstone – in which he was substituted in the first-half having sustained an eye injury.

Centre back Jack Lampe took over in goal as Cowley did not have a replacement goalkeeper, and Butler said he was impressed with the stand-in stopper.

“I got a knock on the head after five minutes and was struggling,” Butler admitted. “I couldn’t see out of my left eye and my kicking was all over the place so I had no choice but to come off.

“Jack went in goal when we were losing so he did well. They didn’t throw an awful lot at him but I didn’t know he could play in goal at all so fair play to him.

“I am ok now though and can’t wait to link up with the team.”
