CANVEY Island secured their first win in more than a year, beating Ilford Wanderers 48-15.

The Islanders were relegated from London Three North East without winning a game last season.

But they finally tasted victory again on the opening day of the Essex One campaign.

However, Canvey had to come from behind to get the points after Ilford used their pack to secure the first try of the game.

The home-side responded with new boy Dan Gillet scoring his first try for the club which was converted by another new signing Joe Sexton.

Sexton also converted a penalty to make it 10-5 to Canvey at half-time before they ran riot during the second period.

Gillet touched down again and Charlie Clarke, Jon Mailes, Ross Mills and Greg Ryan also bagged tries.

Sexton finished the day with 18 points from conversions and penalties and, although they managed to score two unconverted tries, Ilford rarely troubled a dominant Canvey.

But it was a bad first game for Pegasus Palmerians as they were trounced 74-7 at Epping Upper Clapton.
