HEAD of youth Ricky Duncan always knew Southend United’s very own ‘Little Messi’ would have a big future with Blues.

Jack Payne earned the comparison with the Barcelona star as he worked his way up the youth ranks at Roots Hall.

And Duncan, who first signed the midfielder as a 14-year-old, never doubted the youngster’s future in football, despite his small stature.

“We need to get over the importance of someone’s height in this country and really doesn’t matter if you’re 6 ft 6 ins tall or 5 ft 2 ins tall as long as you can play,” said Duncan.

“No footballer should ever be judged on size, especially Jack who has great feet and a great work ethic too.

“All the other lads used to call him the Little Messi because he was left footed and so skilful when it came to small sided games.

“He was one I always knew would have a career in football and I’m delighted he’s been given the chance to show that.”

Payne has scored four goals in five games since working his way in to the Shrimpers’ starting line-up.

And Southend’s gain could well turn out to be Tottenham Hotspur’s loss as he was released from White Hart Lane before arriving at Roots Hall.

“Jack was at Spurs but they released him and he went back to playing Sunday League football,” said Duncan.

“A contact of ours gave us a call and told us he was far too good for that and we should have a look at him.

“He came in for training and we had offered him a contract within two weeks.

“He has worked incredibly hard and I’m sure he will continue to do so.”

However, Payne is not the only youth team graduate to be shining for the Shrimpers’ first team as goalkeeper Daniel Bentley continues to impress between the sticks.

The Wickford based shot-stopper has also attracted an offer from a Premier League club this season.

And Duncan has been delighted by his progress.

“Danny came in after being released by Arsenal but he actually struggled a bit in his first year as a scholar,” said Duncan.

“He took things to heart but players mature at different times and he was fantastic in his second year.

“He’s now a completely different character and has really taken the chance he’s been given in the first team.”

Bentley and Payne are now both expected to stay in the side for Saturday’s clash against Shrewsbury Town at Roots Hall.

The game has also been selected as the club’s academy day and more than 100 of the Shrimpers’ young players will be in attendance.

“It’s fantastic for them to see Jack and Danny playing and to know that our manager will give these young players a chance,” said Brown.

“All of the young players will also be walking round the pitch and it’s great for them to sample the atmosphere of a first team game.”

Duncan also urged more fans to help with the funding of the club’s own players by taking part in the Blues Lottery.

Application forms can be found in the ticket office at Roots Hall and in reception.
