GREAT Wakering Rovers skipper Lewis Sparrow says Great Wakering Rovers are finally getting the results their performances merit.

Rovers had taken four points from two games before their narrow midweek loss at Thamesmead Town – a marked improvement on their previous return of one win in 10 games.

And the Rovers captain has praised his teammates for overcoming their difficult start to the season, to get a foothold in the Ryman North.

“We have definitely picked up form in recent weeks,” said the Rovers skipper. “We have been unlucky in a few games but it was nice to get points against Tilbury and Barkingside and they were much deserved.

“We could have won the match against Tilbury and we need to make sure we don’t switch off at crucial moments. In this league it only takes a second to be punished.

“We know we are good enough to play in this league but we have to be more clinical and stop making individual errors.”

Sparrow said the pace of wide men Tony Jacobs and Tom Strickland was a terrific outlet for the rest of the team, and praised them for their work ethic.

“They are both really good lads. They have pace and skill and they are important qualities at a higher level. They work well for the team but saying that there have been some terrific performances from a number of players this year.”

Sparrow added the players have now moved to indoor training as the winter approaches, which he says the players are enjoying, and he says it will be nice to have a free weekend tomorrow, as their match was cancelled due to an FA Cup clash.

“It will be nice to have a Saturday off,” laughed Sparrow, “although we will be in tomorrow morning to train instead as we have to stay fresh for Tuesday’s match (against Waltham Abbey).

“Waltham Abbey play in the cup so there will be some tired legs on their side and it is up to us to take advantage of that.”
