FULL-BACK Iain Meads will be hoping to help Southend Saxons teach high flying Henley a lesson this weekend.

Henley have triumphed in all three of their National Two South outings so far this season.

But Meads, who is enjoying his second spell with Southend, is determined to end their winning run tomorrow.

“Henley are right up towards the top of the table at the moment but we want to go there and show we can mix it with these sides,” said the 21-year-old.

“I think we have the talent in our squad to be able to do that and we’re going there on the back of a good result against Dings Crusaders so our confidence is high as well.”

Last weekend’s 52-14 win came after Southend had kicked off the new campaign with two defeats in a row.

And Meads, who missed the first of those setbacks, was delighted to help get the Saxons up and running for the season.

“We were far more clinical against Dings and it was great to see,” said Meads.

“There was still room for improve across the board and we wasted a few opportunities to score.

“But it was a big improvement from the week before against Shelford and now we want to try and improve again.”

Meads was also among the try scorers for the first time last weekend.

And the full-back, who also played for Southend for before heading off to Loughborough University, is enjoying being back at Warners Bridge.

“It’s great being back, there’s a brilliant group of players and I’ve been made to feel really welcome,” said Meads.

“I played a handful of games for the club about three or four years ago now before I went to university and hopefully I can play a few more this season now.”

Meads is also combining playing for Southend with a year-long teacher training course.

And working on that qualification played a part in him returning to the National Two South club.

“I was at event and I bumped in to Chris Green (director of rugby) who asked me if I fancied coming back to Southend,” said Meads.

“I didn’t have anything else lined up at the time so I jumped at the chance and now I want to help the team have a really good season.”

However, another former player returning to Southend this season, scrum-half Rhys Powell, has not been as fortunate and he will miss tomorrow’s game with a leg injury.

He will be replaced in the starting line-up by either Lester Pollard or Harry Branch.
