CANVEY Island made it three wins out of three with an 18-6 victory against Bancroft.

But they were forced to come from behind to secure their latest Essex One success.

The first half saw Canvey concede two penalties, while number eight Tommi Gillingwater was harshly sent to the sin bin.

After the break, Canvey hit back with centre Charlie Clarke going over for an unconverted try.

The Islanders remained on top with Jon Edwards kicking a penalty but they were soon hit by another yellow card when Harry Atkins was sent to the sin bin.

However Canvey continued to attack with Edwards finishing off another fine move for another unconverted try.

From the resulting kick off the ball was caught by Gillingwater who made a storming break down the middle of the park before off-loading to second row Jon Mailes who put in a sweet chip behind the Bancroft backs to allow Clarke to touch down for the final try.

To Bancroft’s credit they kept trying to attack the Canvey line and almost succeeded when the referee sin-binned Canvey’s Pat Rowe who had only been on the pitch for 30 seconds after stopping Bancroft from taking a quick penalty.

Having survived the scares, Canvey hit back to try and get the fourth try which would have resulted in a bonus point but they were unable to make the breakthrough.

The win pushed Canvey up to eighth in the table but it was another bad day for bottom of the table Pegasus Palmerians who suffered their third defeat in a row, losing 84-0 at Ilford Wanderers.
