MARCUS Bloomberg is hoping for a repeat of last season when Southend Saxons visit Chinnor in National Two South tomorrow.

The 28-year-old hooker was among the try scorers in Southend’s 36-28 at the Oxfordshire club last November.

And, after a slow start to the current season for the Saxons, Bloomberg is chasing more of the same this weekend.

“Hopefully we can get a similar result to last season and we can show everybody what Southend are really capable of,” said Bloomberg.

“One of the few tries I got last year was also against Chinnor so I’m hoping to replicate that by getting my first try of the season to help us get the win.”

Southend are currently 14th in the 16 team table after losing four of their first five games of the season.

And Bloomberg, whose own start to the campaign was delayed by a knee injury, has been frustrated by the opening few fixtures not going the Saxons’ way.

“It’s been hard to take because I think our squad has been strengthened this season,” said Bloomberg.

“I think maybe we’re still gelling together but a lack of concentration and some basic skill errors in vital parts of some games has also cost us, “But I do think we’re improving and we’re only a fraction off where we need to be.”

However, last time out, Southend were seen off 18-13 by Dorking at Warners Bridge.

And Bloomberg feels the Saxons cannot afford to make another slow start when they take on Chinnor.

“We didn’t get in to the game quick enough last week and we need to learn from that,” said Bloomberg.

“Once again I felt we were our own worst enemy and we gave away too many penalties.

“We didn’t capatilise on the chances we had either but our defence looked good and never looked like it was going to break which was good news.”

Bloomberg feels that will give Southend a solid platform to build from and he is convinced things will soon start to turn around for Chris Green’s side.

“We will 100 per cent definitely get there because it’s just a few little things that have let us down,” said Bloomberg.

“We have identified and are addressing these problems and hope to get back to winning ways.

“We all believe in what we are doing and what structures been put in by the coaches.”

Southend also have experienced scrum-half Rhys Powell available again after he recovered from a leg injury and winger Danny Cleare is in the squad for the first time this season after shaking off a knee problem.

Chinnor head in to tomorrow’s game just one place higher than the Saxons having also lost four of their first five games.
