ESSEX ONE
Dageham........................................49
Canvey Island..................................27
CANVEY Island suffered their first defeat of the Essex One season, losing 49-27 at Dagenham.
Despite the final score-line, Canvey started brightly and took an early lead from the boot of Jon Edwards with a penalty only minutes into the game.
Dagenham hit back almost immediately with a penalty of their own and it was all downhill from the Islanders from then on.
It seemed Dagenham could do no wrong and Canvey were not at the races.
The Islanders’ number eight Matt Gevaux did bag a try but Dagenham turned round 29-8 in front.
Canvey started the second half scoring two tries from second row Harry Atkins and full back Charlie Downs, which were both converted by Edwards to make the score 29-22.
But once again Canvey appeared to fall asleep and let Dagenham in with a try and a penalty to see them stretch their lead.
Another brief rally from Canvey saw winger Steve Hassan touch down for Canvey’s fourth try of the game.
However, Canvey’s minds then seemed to be somewhere else and Dagenham ran in three more tries to take a well earned win.
Canvey had to settle for a four try bonus point and are now seventh in the standings.
