CANVEY Island slipped to a surprising 3-0 home defeat to struggling AFC Hornchurch as they lost ground on the play-off chasing pack.

Danny Heale’s side were aiming for a fourth win in five league games but fell a long way short thanks to three second half goals from the visitors.

A brace from Reece Beckles-Richards and another strike from Danny Johnson were enough for Hornchurch, whose goalkeeper Sam Mott was never truly tested by the Gulls.

John Sands had hit five goals in four games for Canvey before this and his header drew a save from Mott, with Anthony Thomas calling the keeper into action soon after.

Billy Coyne then came close for the visitors, when his free-kick was blocked by the on-loan West Ham United stopper, with the rebound only diverted into the side netting.

The goal did come just before the hour-mark, with John Easterford’s weak back pass pounced upon by Beckles-Richards to round Brown and score.

And the lead was doubled 15 minutes later, Johnson bursting through and having the freedom of the penalty area to slot home.

And Beckles-Richards made the points safe when he drilled across Brown and inside the far post.
