BILLERICAY golfers Bob Turner and Steve Adkins will be aiming for national glory when they compete in Morocco next year.

The Stock Brook Manor members qualified from a regional final to contest the Morocco Matchplay national amateur seniors final between February 8-14.

Turner, 58, and 52-year-old playing partner Adkins booked their place following the regional showdown at Manor House GC in Wiltshire.

Five-handicapper Turnerm – who works in the banking industry – said: “It’s the first time I’ve played in the seniors, though I’ve competed in the mixed pairs previously.

“It was a tough course to walk. And it got harder on the back nine as the rain got heavier. We’d have been happy with 40 points but to come in with 42, well, we thought we’d win with that.

“But we worked well together and qualified.”

Company director Adkins, who plays off a handicap of two, added: “It was a first-time entry for me and it was certainly a test of endurance walking between the hills today.

“I’m really looking forward to a nice break in the winter in Morocco.”

The pair will play five rounds of golf in Morocco, including one on the Red course at Royal Golf Dar Essalam, which hosted the last Moroccan Open in 2001 which was won by Ryder Cup star Ian Poulter.

The grand final sees the culmination of four competitions – singles, pairs, mixed pairs and senior pairs – with a total of 32 golfers from around the UK battling it out for the titles.

Each pair played up to four qualifying rounds in the summer to reach the regional final this month.
