FA Cup 4th Qualifying Round

CANVEY Island played out a stalemate against Conference South side Havant & Waterlooville in an entertaining tie.

The Gulls came into the match as underdogs, against a side sitting 3rd in the division above, but you wouldn’t have been able to tell the difference between the teams early on.

And it was the hosts that came flying out of the blocks. With less than a minute on the clock 11-goal man John Sands was sent through by Harrison Chatting but he could only shoot straight at Ryan Young, who palmed his effort over the bar.

Chatting was causing the Havant defence problems and his neat footwork on the area created an opening, but shot wide with the keeper rooted to the spot.

The Conference South side showed signs of growing into the match and Josh Huggins sent a fierce effort across the face of goal although Brown remained untested.

Brown could only watch moments later after good link play between Bubb and Hooper saw the latter strike across the face of goal, although Rio Bryan-Edwards’ desperate dive on the line.

Into the second half it was Canvey who again came out the better. Sands was in the middle of the action and he missed a golden chance to out the Gulls ahead.

A fine left wing cross from Osobu spotted the run of the hitman but he got too much on his header and sent it over the crossbar.

But once again it was the visitors who came storming back, with Hooper only denied by a tremendous goal line clearance from a sprawling Joe Carter.

And it was the favourites who continued to push on, Carter again clearing well at the far post while Brown comfortably claimed a Dutton header.

Havant substitute Shamir Mullings headed just over the bar but the game ended goalless.

The two sides will replay on Tuesday.
