SOUTHEND United manager Phil Brown was furious with referee Darren Drysdale for failing to award a penalty in his side’s 1-1 draw with Bury at Roots Hall.

Brown felt a spot-kick should have been awarded for Tom Kennedy’s challenge on David Worrall shortly after the Shakers’ equaliser.

And he is also felt the decision summed up his team’s fortunes as they have now not triumphed in five games.

“I’ve spoken to the referee about it but I’ll find myself in trouble if I say what I really feel,” said Brown.

“He’s got the wrong decision, it’s as simple as that.

“It’s an absolute stonewall penalty. I just cannot for the life of it see how he hasn’t given it. Their lad is in trouble, he’s the wrong side of David Worrall who has a free shot at goal so why would he fall flat on his face. It just beggars belief.

“I also think we did enough to win the game but we’re just not getting the luck at the moment.

“The penalty decision sums that up for me and, although we haven’t got a victory in five games, I think we should have won three of them.

“We’re working hard on the training ground and we’re doing all we can but I honestly don’t think we’re that far away from turning things round again.”
