SOUTHEND United loanee Jerome Binnom-Williams is backing whoever fills in for him at left-back to shine against Hartlepool this weekend.

Binnom-Williams, who is with the Shrimpers from Crystal Palace, will miss the match with the Monkeyhangers at Roots Hall after picking up a one game ban for accumulating five yellow cards.

But, despite there being no other natural left-back in the Southend squad, Binnom-Williams is confident his replacement can help Blues come out on top.

“There isn’t really another left-back in the squad but there’s so many talented players here that I’m sure someone will be able to play there and do a good job,” said Binnom-Williams.

“I’m really frustrated that I’m going to have to miss the match because I want to be playing every week.

“But these things happen and I’ll have to make sure I learn from it.

“Hopefully the lads will put in a good performance and we can get the result to make sure everyone is smiling again.”

John White, Michael Timlin and Luke Prosser have all previously filled in at left-back and could be in consideration to play there again on Saturday.

Blues will be bidding to bounce back from last weekend’s FA Cup defeat to Conference club Chester.

However, Binnom-Williams felt the Shrimpers did not actually perform too badly last weekend.

“I thought we were a bit unlucky and we should’ve won,” said the 19-year-old.

“Things just didn’t go our way which can happen. But everyone is sticking together and training has been going well ahead of Saturday’s game.”

The game this weekend will also be the first Binnom-Williams has missed since signing for the Shrimpers.

The youngster has started all 11 games since joined from the Eagles.

And he feels he has already benefitted from playing regular first team football.

“It’s been really good for me to get out and get games,” said Binnom-Williams.

“There’s more to play for than the under 21 games and you have to put your body on the line when you’re defending.

“There have been ups and downs since I came in but we have a good team and I always have a smile on my face when I’m here.”
