SOUTHEND United’s George Burton insisted scoring the winning goal in tonight’s FA Youth Cup clash with Barnet was the best moment of his life so far.

The 16-year-old striker superbly headed home a 21st minute cross from Brandon Scott.

And the effort proved to be the difference between the two teams, despite Southend having skipper Ross Johnson sent off at the start of the second half.

“I’m just so happy that we’ve won and scoring the goal was the best moment I’ve ever had,” said Burton, who is from Gants Hill.

“It’s my favourite goal I’ve ever scored and the most important one too.

“I don’t score many headers either and I had actually been practising them lately with Ricky Duncan so that’s certainly paid off now.”

But Blues were forced to work tirelessly after Burton’s effort.

And Burton felt the Shrimpers’ spirit was the key in them coming out on top.

“The whole team worked so hard and showed what we’re all about, team spirit and heart,” said the striker, who has been with Blues since 2011.

“Barnet are a good side and they put so much pressure on us.

“It was hard for us, especially going down to 10 men but we’re all buzzing to have got through.”

As a result, Southend will now host Middlesbrough in the third round and Burton cannot wait for the tie.

“It’s one of the best draws we could’ve got and I’m really excited about it already,” he added.
