SOUTHEND United are sweating on the fitness of Ryan Leonard after the influential midfielder limped off with a groin problem at Tranmere Rovers.

Leonard, who was Blues’ player of the year last season, was forced to come off with a groin problem at half-time.

And Shrimpers manager Phil Brown is desperately hoping the setback is not too serious.

“Ryan’s an important player for us and our initial thoughts are that he’s just tweaked his groin,” said Brown.

“He was at full tilt running back from our corner and extended his groin. We don’t like soft tissue injuries but you do get them.

“He will be with the physios today and tomorrow and hopefully we can get him right for Saturday’s game with Northampton Town but we’ll have to wait and see how he responds to treatment.”
