SOUTHEND United’s first team squad spread some Christmas cheer on a visit to the children’s ward at Southend Hospital.

The entire Shrimpers squad and manager Phil Brown handed out presents to the unwell youngsters.

And Brown was only too happy to be able to attend.

“I think it’s important we go out and do this and I was delighted by the turn out of our players, “said Brown.

“To a man they were all in attendance and there were actually more players than children which I was really happy about.

“These visits are always an eye opener and it’s great if we are able to give the parents and their kids any kind of boost at this time.

“The lads were all there for an hour or so and I stayed behind afterwards to chat to the staff who I have huge admiration for.

“People in football often moan about having to train and play during Christmas but we’re the lucky ones really.

“The nurses at the hospital and the other staff there are working Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

“They have to work incredibly hard throughout Christmas and the work they do is fantastic.”
