STEVE Cawley had no trouble finding his way to goal against Barnet, but finding the ground was a whole different ball game.

The 24-year-old scored twice in the Beach Boys’ 6-2 FA Trophy rout of the Conference Premier leaders but at one point Danny Cowley and co were left wondering if he would even turn up at the Hive Stadium.

As it happens, Cawley had arrived at Barnet in plenty of time, only for him to realise that his Sat-Nav had taken him to Underhill, which was the Bees ground...until July 2013.

“I had a bit of a nightmare,” he laughed. “I actually wrote on Twitter that it was a local game for me but when I went to leave I just put Barnet FC into my phone and it took me to the old ground.

“I got there early and there was no-one else there but I didn’t think too much of it. But about 6.30pm I text (Lewis) Taaffe and asked where he was and he told me they were in the changing room!

“Then I realised I was in the wrong place, but luckily their new ground was only 20 minutes away so I wasn’t too late.”

He was fined by manager Danny Cowley for his late arrival, although Cawley said he had to come up with a fair fine at risk of it being doubled by the club.

“I though £10 was reasonable and I think that was what was agreed,” he said. “Luckily I scored twice so I kind of made up for it!”

Cawley targeted 15 goals at the start of the season, but his double at the Hive took his tally for the season to 11 already.

And he said he may need to re-think the total over Christmas.

“It’s going well,” he said. “But I have to thank Danny for that. He believes in me and keeps me going and I am confident when in goal scoring positions at the moment.

“I have a little competition going with Taaffe at the moment and he has four in five at the moment, but he won’t catch me.”
