CANVEY Island threw away a half-time advantage as a superb Pelayo Pico Gomez hat-trick dealt Danny Heale another massive blow.

The Gulls have lost six of their last eight matches and find themselves only five points off the drop zone.

The Gulls could have taken the lead after only five minutes, when Rio Bryan-Edwards shot into the side-netting.

But the lead wasn’t long in coming and it was Enoch Showunmi who scored his first in Canvey yellow.

The big Nigerian turned onto his right foot and shot, via a divot on the pitch, to find its way into the net.

Another African international was on the pitch, with ex-Ghanaian striker Elvis Hammond on show for Kingstonian.

He shot wide before Sam Page struck an effort off the crossbar.

In a first half of few chances, the second period burst into life.

Marlon Agyakwa saw an effort bounce onto the roof of the net, and moments later Tim Brown was called into action, when he made a great save from Gomez.

But Gomez was to have the last laugh when he leveled from the penalty spot.

Dan King was robbed of the ball in midfield, culminating in Harrison Chatting bringing down Gomez in the area.

And he slotted home the resulting kick.

Brown could do nothing about that but was at fault for the goal that put the visitors in front.

He came rushing off his line but failed to make a connection with the ball and Gomez was able to continue his run and score.

With 15 minutes to go he completed his hat-trick and it was the pick of the bunch.

The Spaniard picked up the ball and curled a delightful effort into the corner from 20 yards.
