BLUES boss Phil Brown has not ruled out popular defender Adam Barrett making a sensational return to Roots Hall.

The Shrimpers are desperately short of options at centre-back for Saturday’s clash against Plymouth Argyle as both Luke Prosser and Cian Bolger serve suspensions.

And Brown would therefore welcome the chance to speak to Barrett, who has just completed a five month loan spell at AFC Wimbledon.

“I watched Wimbledon’s FA Cup match against Liverpool the other night and I thought Adam had a great game for them,” said the 55-year-old.

“We are obviously looking to bring in a defender before Saturday’s game with Plymouth Argyle and I would certainly not rule anything out where Adam is concerned.

“I would definitely like to talk to him about his future.”

The Benfleet based Barrett grew up supporting the Shrimpers and made 289 appearances during a six year spell with the club earlier on his career.

An online Echosport poll has revealed 80 per cent of Southend fans would like to see him back at the club. And, speaking to Echosport, Barrett would also not rule out returning to Blues.

“You never know what might happen,” said Barrett.

“But if any club wants to sign me then they know where I am.”

Barrett has been told he is free to leave Gillingham and AFC Wimbledon remain keen to sign him on a permanent basis.
