JOE Pigott is desperate to get Southend United among the goals on a more regular basis.

The Shrimpers triumphed 3-2 at Oxford United on Saturday, with the on loan Pigott heading home his first goal for the club.

But, prior to the clash at the Kassam Stadium, the Shrimpers had bagged just two goals in their last five outings.

And Pigott, who is with Southend from Charlton Athletic, wants to keep the new found form going.

“I’ve only been here for two games but when I signed everyone was telling me the club hadn’t been getting enough goals so it was great to get three at Oxford,” said Pigott, 21.

“Hopefully we can keep on performing like that and I’m sure we will if the same types of crosses keep coming in to the box.

“Ben Coker’s delivery was top draw at the weekend. I think he made all three goals and hopefully I can keep on getting my head on the end of them.”

Pigott headed home an excellent cross from the left-back at the start of the second half to open his account for the Shrimpers.

And he believes the well taken effort will provide him with a huge boost in the forthcoming fixtures, starting with Saturday’s clash at Portsmouth.

“Getting the goal will make a huge difference to me,” said Pigott.

“It gives you a big boost and improves your confidence too.

“Hopefully I can build on that now because it’s another really big game against Portsmouth this weekend.

“I’ve been really impressed by the football we’ve been playing and we will want to do the same at the weekend to try and get another good result.”

Pigott will also be looking to get among the goals at Fratton Park.

But he does not yet know whether his initial month long spell will be extending by the Shrimpers.

“I really don’t know what’s going on, especially since Charlton have a new manager now,” said Pigott.

“I’m just focusing on the games I know I have coming up with Southend and making sure I do as well as I can.

“I’ll certainly be aiming for more games and then we will have to see what happens after that but I’m really enjoying it here at the moment.”
