CANVEY Island made it four Essex One victories in a row with a 20-15 win against East London.

The Islanders started the game brightly and kept their visitors in their own half for the first 20 minutes.

Tom Lister kicked a penalty during the spell of pressure while full back went over for an unconverted try to put the hosts 8-0 in front.

But, after that, Canvey began to ease off and East London took full advantage to score an unconverted try of their own.

That cut the Islanders’ lead to 8-5 at the break but Canvey stepped things up again at the start of the second half.

East London had to result to foul play to stop Canvey’s pack and that soon resulted in one of their prop forwards being sent to the sin bin.

Canvey immediately took advantage of their extra man with Downs going over for his second try of the afternoon was which converted by Lister.

The hosts continued to pile on the pressure and, from a scrum, they increased their advantage even further when scrum half Lister went over for an unconverted try.

East London refused to give in though and set up a tense finale when they over for a try before also being awarded a penalty try.

However, Canvey were able to hang on to secure the win and that delighted their coach Rob Edwards.

“This was one of our better team performances of the season in both defence and attack,” said Edwards.

“Our back row created chances at every opportunity particularly Matt Gevaux who had an outstanding game.

“But if we want to beat the best we have got to learn to play for the full 80 minutes.”
