CANVEY Island were seen off 58-28 by high-flying Epping Upper Clapton in Essex One.

The Islanders secured a bonus point after scoring four tries.

And club spokeman Richard Smith felt the scoreline was harsh on Canvey.

“We were beaten by a very good side but the score tends to flatter Upper Clapton slightly,” said Smith.

“I should think they knew coming off the pitch they had been in a game of rugby.”

Second-placed Epping Upper Clapton started well and led 15-0 inside the opening 15 minutes.

But Canvey’s heads never went down and they were rewarded with tries from flanker Matt Gevaux , winger Jack Chandler, scrum half John Breading and number eight Harry Atkins who scored the pick of the bunch.

All four tries were also converted by fly-half Jon Edwards.

The defeat pushed the Islanders down to seventh in the standings, two places higher than Pegasus Palmerians who beat East London 24-19.
