A NEW underpass at one of Scotland's most notorious bottlenecks opens

to traffic on Monday. The #7.4m underpass at Gogar, on the outskirts of

Edinburgh, will take traffic on the Glasgow road underneath the existing

roundabout, which is reputed to be the busiest in the country. The

roundabout is used by more than 100,000 vehicles a day and by 7000 an

hour during peak periods.

Planning permission was granted in February last year for the project

which has been jointly funded by Edinburgh District Council, the

Scottish Office, and retailers Marks and Spencer and Safeway who are

planning a new shopping centre nearby at Gyle.
