Leiston 1-1 Canvey Island
From Victory Road
Ryman Premier League
CANVEY Island grabbed a crucial point at Leiston to ensure their league fate is in their own hands come the final day of the season.
Jack Simmons’ intervention ensured the Gulls would head into their final day encounter with Wingate & Finchley, knowing a point will likely be enough to keep them up because of their superior goal difference.
Danny Heale’s side were anxious to put last weekend’s 4-0 drubbing at the hands of Hampton & Richmond Borough behind them with a strong showing against a Suffolk side, who were unlikely to make the play-offs.
And they played well, with Enoch Showunmi and Harrison Tweddell restored to the starting line-up.
However, it was looking bleak for Canvey at half-time, having conceded only four minutes before the interval.
Tom Winter scored the goal with a neat finish past Tim Brown to leave the visitors hovering above the relegation places but a much improved second-half display, spurred on by the away support, saw more chances.
Despite the absence of captain Jay Curran, the visitors looked threatening and grabbed a deserved equaliser through Simmons.
The nippy winger tucked home to send the away fans back to Canvey satisfied with a point.
It could have been better for Canvey, but impressive wins for Harrow Borough and VCD Athletic mean Peacehaven & Telscombe occupy fourth bottom into the final day.
Canvey Island: Brown, Collis, Dumas, Jones, Banton, Easterford, Sykes, Chatting, Smith, Showunmi, Tweddell
