IAN Benjamin has told the current Southend United team they will never be forgotten if they win at Morecambe tomorrow.

Benjamin fired Blues to promotion from Division Three back in 1991 when firing home the only goal of the game at Bury.

And, 24 years later, the former striker is still greeted warmly by the Shrimpers supporters.

“They never forget you at Southend when you win promotion and I hope this team get to find that out too,” said Benjamin.

“I was lucky enough to have success elsewhere in my career but it’s not the same going back there compared to Southend.

“At Roots Hall they love you and for me the feeling is mutual because the fans have always been so great to me.

“I don’t really use Facebook but when I do it’s to reply to Southend fans who message me.

“I really do hope the team can do it this weekend and, with the form they’re in at the moment, I’ll think they’ll do it.

“I would fancy them against anyone in this league right now because they’ve hit form at just the right stage.”

Benjamin will be working for BBC Radio Northampton tomorrow, covering the Cobblers’ clash with Wycombe.

But he will be keeping tabs on Blues’ game at the Globe Arena at the same time.

“When Southend played at Bury the other night I was checking my phone every five minutes to look at the score and I’m sure I will again tomorrow,” said Benjamin.

“I was impressed in both of their games with Northampton too and I hope they do again at Morecambe but it will be a tough game for them there.”
