THERE was double success for Basildon AC at the Essex Pentathlon Championships held in Grays.

Kristian Brown was a dominant winner in the under-17 men’s competition while Charlotte Skeggs just got the better of team-mate Mia Bullman in a thrilling under-17 women’s event.

Bradley Gittens won a third medal for Basildon on the day as he picked up a silver in the under-13 boys event.

Brown led the under-17 men’s field from the outset and never looked back, finishing with a record that read: long jump (5.74m), javelin (51.16m), 200m (23.7s), discus (37.83m) and 1,500m (4m 45.0s).

The under-17 women’s competition came down to an exciting 800m race.

Bullman was leading by 109 points after running 13.4s for the 80m hurdles, putting the shot 8.29m, clearing 1.55m in her favoured high jump event and going out to 4.75m in the long jump.

But Skeggs – whose record up to the 800m was 80mh 13.1s, shot 8.13m, high jump 1.46m and long jump 4.63m – dug deep to win the final two-lap race in 2m 44.2s and take the gold medal with 2,635 points.

Bullman clocked 3m 1.6s over the 800m and was also passed by Newham’s Zoe Thompson and had to settle for bronze.

Gittens won silver in the under-13 boys competition with a scorecard of: 75mh 15.4s, shot 6.26m, long jump 3.97m, high jump 1.20m and 800m 2m 32.8s to finish with 1,109 points.

In the under-15 girls event, Basildon’s Kiera Bainsfair was fourth with 2,719 points and Mia Chantree sixth with 2,018 points.

Southend High School for Boys’ Sam Bennett was the silver medallist in the under-15 boys competition with 2,644 points.

Bennett’s record was: 80mh 11.3s, shot 10.83m, long jump 5.84m, high jump 1.54m, 800m 2m 27.5s Thurrock Harriers’ William Adeyeye won the competition with 2,807 points.
