PHIL Brown cannot wait to be back at Wembley with a Southend United team he now considers to be his own this weekend.

Brown will lead the Shrimpers out at the home of English football for Saturday’s League Two play-off final against Wycombe Wanderers.

And the 55-year-old is hoping on will prove to be a far more enjoyable occasion than his previous visit to the world-famous stadium with Blues, a 2-0 defeat against Crewe Alexandra, which came just 13 days after his appointment in 2013.

“I didn’t feel like I belonged to that day if I’m honest, it wasn’t me and it wasn’t my team,” said Brown.

“There had been a real hoo-ha and palaver about who was going to lead the team out in the build-up to the final and whether or not Paul Sturrock was going to come back to do it.

“Looking back now it all seems a bit farcical and I told Graham Coughlan to do it in the end because he had done far more with that team than me at that stage.

“I had only been in charge of two games, Bradford away and Fleetwood at home which were both draws, so nobody was really jumping off the page at me when it came to picking the team that day.”

However, two years on, Brown has stamped his structure on the side.

And he hopes that can result in the Shrimpers winning promotion on Saturday.

“I’ll definitely feel a part of things this time because it’s my club now as far as I’m concerned,” said Brown.

“It’s a massive match because of what’s at stake but we’re going into it in good form and we’ve prepared well too.

“It’s now just all about Saturday and the previous 48 matches we’ve had don’t matter anymore.

“We need to deliver when it matters and if we do then it will be right up there with anything else I’ve achieved in the game.”
