SOUTHEND United manager Phil Brown is attempting to bring both striker David Mooney and attacking midfielder Anthony Wordsworth to the club, Echosport can exclusively reveal.

Brown is keen to bolster his attacking options at the Shrimpers as they make the step up to League One.

And Mooney and Wordsworth top the Blues boss' summer shopping list.

“It's true that David and Anthony are two of the players we're after,” confirmed Brown.

“I think they are exactly the type of players we need here and hopefully we can bring them in.”

Mooney has spent the last four seasons with Leyton Orient, scoring 51 goals in 131 starts.

The 30-year-old hit the back of the net 21 times during the 2013/14 season as the O's reached the final of the League One play-offs.

But the East London outfit struggled badly last season and Mooney netted just nine times as they were unable to avoid relegation.

However, Mooney remains keen to play in at least League One and he is available on a free transfer having not agreed a new contract with Orient.

The Irishman has previously played for Reading, Stockport County, Norwich City, Charlton Athletic and Colchester United and has scored 76 career goals in 260 appearances.

But he could now be heading to Blues and so too could Wordsworth following his release from Ipswich Town.

Anthony Wordsworth - could be heading to Southend United

Wordsworth came through the ranks at the Shrimpers' Essex rivals Colchester United and scored 35 goals in 199 games before joining Ipswich Town in a £100,000 deal in January 2013.

However, Wordsworth – whose family are Southend supporters – suffered with injuries while at Portman Road and made just 10 starts for the Tractor Boys.

The 26-year-old also ended last season on loan at Crawley Town but was unable to keep them in League One, despite scoring four goals in 18 games.
