CONCORD Rangers are on the verge on losing another of last season’s star players with Alex Woodyard edging closer to the exit, and a possible reunion with former manager Danny Cowley.

The 22-year-old England C international was named supporters’ player of the year at the Beach Boys last term, but could soon be on his way out after Cowley, who left Concord to join National League side Braintree Town at the end of the season, declared his interest in the player.

Woodyard, who made his second appearance for the non-league Three Lions at the start of the month, has been invited to link up with the start of Braintree’s pre-season training today.

He is also trialling with League Two outfit Leyton Orient, as he aims to break back into the professional game having previously played for Southend United.

But Iron boss Cowley hopes Woodyard will join defender Matt Fry in making the switch from Concord to Cressing Road.

“Alex was fantastic for us last year and we have known him a long time,” he said.

“We worked hard to get him to Concord last year and were really pleased to be able to pick him up after his time at Dartford.

“His form won him a much-deserved England C call-up and I know he had rave reviews from (England C manager) Paul Fairclough.

“He will come to us for the first few pre-season sessions before he goes to Leyton Orient for a trial period.

“If it doesn’t work out there then he will certainly open up opportunities for us.

“We are strong in that central midfield position but Alex is someone who we know well and we rate very highly.”

Woodyard has previously appeared for Braintree, making 12 appearances in a loan spell, when he was with Southend at the end of the 2012/13 season.

Concord have also lost defender Jack Lampe this week to St Albans City.
