SOUTHEND United manager Phil Brown has urged Shrimpers supporters not to panic at the lack of summer signings.

Brown has yet to add to his squad since leading Blues to promotion via the League Two play-offs last season.

But the 56-year-old is confident of fresh faces arriving before he takes the squad to Spain for the start of pre-season training.

“My message to the supporters would be to relax about things because it’s still very early and June is pretty much always a dead month,” he said.

“We’re working hard behind the scenes to bring new players to the football club and also keep those we’re in talks with about a new contract.

“There’s still a long way to go until the start of the season but I’m confident of making a few signings before we head out to our Spain training camp on July 5.

“If not then I think we will have signed them by the time we get back on July 10 and I’m sure when the new season starts we will have four or five new players here.”

Two of Brown’s main transfer targets are known to be former Leyton Orient striker David Mooney and ex-Colchester United midfielder Anthony Wordsworth.

And the Shrimpers chief insists both players could still be coming to the club.

“I’ve spoken to the chairman and we’re very positive about the way things are progressing,” said Brown.

“People know that we’re in for these two players and we’re still very hopeful it can happen.

“But this could be a big week for us and hopefully we can get a few things sorted out.”
