SPORTS students and staff at Seevic College celebrated a record-breaking year of team and individual success at the college’s sports presentation evening.

Rhianna Ward, 18, goal shooter for Seevic Storm Netball, took home the prestigious Eddie Kay Trophy – awarded for academic and sporting excellence – on a night of glitz and glamour at the Mill Arts and Events Centre in Rayleigh.

She said: “The award was a big surprise to me. It showed that over the two years of studying at Seevic all my hard work and time spent completing the assessments paid off.

“Through the success of the netball team I’ve had the chance to play at a number of prestigious tournaments, become a better team player and developed new skills on and off the court.”

The evening also saw awards presented to men’s football captain Brandon Fry, 18, who was the male sports personality of the year and netball captain Callie Worth, 18, who was crowned female sports personality of the year.

The college’s director of rugby Danny Cleare, who led Seevic to a national final at Twickenham, was named coach of the year, while the women’s basketball team picked up the team of the year title after a stunning season that saw them win the AoC Sport Performance League, take silver medal at the National Championships and finish runners up in the Essex Cup.

Meanwhile, Francesca Rickwood, 18, was presented with the Outstanding Achievement Award.

Rickwood, who previously attended the FitzWimarc School, is a world holder in her weight category for powerlifting.

The annual event followed an unprecedented year of success which saw the college’s sports programme cement its status as one of the most successful in England.

As well as the men’s rugby team being national runners up in the NatWest Schools Vase at Twickenham, the men’s football team were the AoC Eastern Region champions and the men’s basketball team won the Essex Cup.

The women’s netball team were national semi-finalists and the women’s basketball team AoC Sport Performance League winners.

Head of competitive sport at the college Craig Davidson said: “It’s been an exceptional year for sport at Seevic College, making this year’s presentation evening a fantastic celebration of sporting achievement.

“We’ve enjoyed phenomenal success across our team and individual sports provision.

“Women’s sport also continues to thrive at the college, evidenced by the success of our women’s basketball team.”
