NOEL Hunt is closing in on a switch to Southend United, Echosport understands.

The experienced Irishman watched the Shrimpers in action against Charlton Athletic from the directors box at Roots Hall tonight and terms are now believed to be at an advanced stage.

Hunt, who was released by Ipswich Town at the end of last season, also met with the players and staff while at the game and Blues are hopeful of soon completing a deal.

The 32-year-old striker has also attracted been attracting interest from Major League Soccer side Chicago Fire but he is now edging towards joining the League One newcomers.

Hunt’s arrival would significantly boost the Shrimpers who currently boast just one senior striker in their squad just 11 days before the start of the new season.

Hunt has also previously played for Dundee United, Reading and Leeds United and has bagged more than 80 goals during his career.
