GREAT Wakering Rovers were the stand-out winners in the Alan Turvey League Cup yesterday, as they beat Tilbury 3-1 to continue their superb start to the season.

Manager Dan Trenkel had insisted he would be playing a full-strength side for the match and that paid dividends, as goals from Billy Johnson and James Pugsley put them two goals up at the break.

Matt Game halved arrears for the hosts but the on-form Tom Ranger scored a third to confirm the result.

It was not such a happy evening for Ryman Premier League pair Billericay Town and Canvey Island, as both were knocked out.

CBillericay were beaten 2-1 at home by Aveley, who gained revenge for their defeat at the hands of Billericay in last year’s Essex Senior Cup semi-final.

Lee Weemes put Aveley ahead before half-time, with centra-back Junior baker making it 2-0 after 64 minutes.

Tom Derry scored for the thirs game in a row to make it 2-1 but they could get the leveller they so desired.

Canvey were beaten on penalty kicks by Grays Athletic, having taken the match to sudden death after scoring two late goals.

Goalless at half-time, James Stevens and a Steve Sheehan own goal had put the away side ahead only for Harrison Chatting and Martin Tuohy to score in the last 15 minutes.

Straight to penalties, it was former Grays man Dan Gilchrist who missed the decisive kick to send Grays through.
