ENGLAND’S recent Ashes success contained some crazy and convincing victories.

But it was nothing compared to what went on at Eastwood Cricket Club on Saturday.

Needing a win to boost their survival hopes in Division Three of the T-Rippon Mid-Essex League, Eastwood bowled out visitors Herongate for just six runs.

And the match, which lasted just 24 balls, was all over in 30 minutes, much to the amazement of bowler George Howe who took three wickets without conceding a single run.

“At the end of the match nobody could quite believe what had happened,” said Howe, 17.

“People at the club believe it’s the lowest score we’ve ever bowled a team out for and for the game to be all over by 1.45pm was just crazy.

“It was all a bit hectic and once we got the first wicket they just kept on falling.

“They only had seven players and, after two wickets in two balls, I was a bit disappointed I didn’t get a hat-trick because I’ve never got one before.

“But for their innings to be over in 16 balls was just unbelievable.”

At the other end, Eastwood captain Brett Deeming took three wickets for just five runs while one bye was also conceded to leave him stunned at the close of play.

“It was all just a bit mad,” said Deeming.

“They had to fulfil the fixture otherwise they would’ve been kicked out of the league and like most teams I think the V Festival affected the availability of their players.

“I put them into bat after winning the toss and I’ve never known anything quite like it to be honest.

“I’m not sure what the record is for the lowest ever total but that has to be pushing it.”

The two teams played a Twenty20 friendly once the league clash had ended so early.

And Eastwood press secretary Ian Roake is now trying to establish whether or not the game was the shortest ever in competitive cricket.

“I would imagine this must be one of the quickest ever games,” said Roake.

“But I would like to praise the sporting attitude of Herongate and it is sad to see an old established club in a situation like this.”
