SOUTHEND United manager Phil Brown wants another pivotal clash at Burton Albion tomorrow – but this time with the right result.

The Shrimpers were beaten by a 10 man Brewers 2-1 on the previous visit to the Pirelli Stadium in March.

But Brown believes the defeat was instrumental in firing his side up for an ultimately successful promotion push.

And the 56-year-old hopes this season’s visit can be equally as inspiring.

“Defeat at Burton last season sparked us into action and ultimately led us to the dream day at Wembley,” said Brown.

“We lost a game we should’ve won but from there on we had eight clean sheets in a row and seven victories.

“That set us up for the fateful day at Morecambe and then Wembley.

“Now we’re going there again to take on a team who are top of the league and hopefully it can be another key game, just with a much better result this time.”

The 10th placed Shrimpers head into the clash full of confidence after securing three victories in succession.

And Brown cannot wait for his in-form side to test themselves against the table-topping Brewers, who were also promoted from League Two last term.

“We’re almost a quarter of the way through the season and I’m looking forward to this game with some vigour and verve,” said Brown.

“Burton have the same kind of mentality as us.

“We’ve watched them a few times and they’re a resilient bunch.

“I’m not at all surprised how well they’re doing because the manager Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink is a studious man.

“He’s picked up the mantle from Gary Rowett who left to join Birmingham City and they’ve been doing really well.”

As a result, Burton have been beaten just twice this term.

But Brown is expecting a very close game against them tomorrow.

“I think it could be decided by the odd goal or maybe even a refereeing decision because it will be that even,” said the 56-year-old.

“They’ve had a player sent off on all three occasions I’ve been there with Southend but, as we know to our cost, that didn’t mean the game is over.

“We will have to keep on playing well and keep showing belief if we are to pick something up from the game.”
