CANVEY Island suffered two serious injury setbacks during their 20-20 draw at Writtle Wanderers in Essex One.

Hooker Scot Floyd tore shoulder ligaments while second row Jon Mailes dislocated his knee and also sustained ligament damage.

With Mailes receiving medical attention the match was switched to an adjacent pitch. Writtle went ahead with a try from their full-back before Canvey hit back with Dan Gillett touching down and captain Charlie Clarke adding the conversion.

The Islanders scored again when Mailes touched down from a driving maul and Clarke kicked the conversion.

Writtle replied with an unconverted try to cut Canvey’s lead to 14-12 before the game was halted by the serious injuries.

Once the match got going again, Canvey went further ahead with two penalties.

But a penalty from Maldon and a late unconverted try in the dying seconds meant the game ended all square.

Canvey now sit sixth in the table while Pegasus Palmerians are eighth after losing 42-14 at Braintree.

Stanford le Hope are ninth after a 29-10 defeat at home to Maldon.
