CONCORD Rangers winger Ben Greenhalgh is positive becoming a professional golfer won’t drive a wedge between himself and football.

The Beach Boys trickster is well known for his skill on the football pitch, and he has now branched out into a second sport, after being accepted onto the PGA circuit.

And the former Inter Milan youngster is excited at the progress he has made in the sport, having spent plenty of time on the golf course in recent years.

“When I was playing football professionally I played a lot of golf as so many of my teammates did,” said the scratch golfer. “I played after training a lot and got my handicap down into single figures and a few people were saying I should give it a go.

“I have played in a few competitions and about four months ago I thought I would give it a go. It was not a main objective for me as that is still my football but I think that is one of the reasons it has gone so well.

“But it is good to be able to have this as well. It means I can work in the pro shop or turn to coaching which appeals to me. I am a football coach and I think I can offer a lot in golf as well as a lot of coaches try to teach you the way they have been taught as opposed to improving what someone can do already.

“But I am not going to put pressure on myself. I will enter a competition every month and see where it takes me.”

The 23-year-old returned to the Aspect Arena at the start of the season and started the campaign in impressive fashion. He was rested against Chelmsford City recently, a match Concord lost 5-2, and he is expected to start tomorrow against Hayes & Yeading as the Beach Boys aim to return to winning ways.

“We are looking at games a different way this season,” he said. “The team is different and most of the teams we are playing have changed a lot as well.

“We have not had many positive results recently but we are working hard. We didn’t have a game last weekend so we are fresh, although I would have rather played a game of course.

“I do want some more goals though. I have got some assists and come close with a number of free-kicks but we need to be creating more chances to score.

“We did that against Eastbourne so hopefully we have turned a corner and can really push on.”

Greenhalgh is also looking for sponsorship as he aims to kick on in the sport.

"Some form of sponsorship would be a great help as you need a bit of backing for entry fees and other aspects of the game."
