SOUTHEND United’s Harry Phillips was full of smiles after firing home his first hat-trick in five years in tonight’s FA Youth Cup success at Barton Rovers.

The highly rated midfielder netted a trio of strikes in the Shrimpers’ 9-1 victory.

And the 18-year-old was happy to have helped Blues finally reach the second round of the competition.

“It was a good game, it was great to get the win and it was pleasing to get the three goals three as well,” said the Wickford based Phillips.

“I think the last time I got a hat-trick was for the under 13s so to get another one, in the FA Youth Cup, is really pleasing.

“But I’m just pleased we were able to win the game if I’m honest.”

Phillips’ hat-trick was completed before the hour mark with his third goal coming from the penalty spot.

But he did not feel under added pressure to hit the back of the net from 12 yards.

“I don’t really get nervous taking penalties and I didn’t this time either,” said Phillips.

“It was just really nice to see it hit the back of the net.”

Phillips also scored in the first game between the two teams, which ended in a 6-1 win for the Shrimpers.

However, the tie was forced to be replayed after Blues fielded an underage player.

And Phillips, who lined up on the left wing, admitted it was tough to head back to Barton.

“We had already beaten them so it was mentally a bit tougher coming back for a second time but we have a strong team so I knew we would do well,” said the youngster.

“Now we’re looking forward to the next round against Newport.”

A date for the second round tie has yet to be confirmed but it is believed to be taking place next Wednesday.

The winner of the game will head to Blackburn Rovers in the third round.
