SUPERSTAR diver Tom Daley will compete alongside his new 10 metre synchro partner Daniel Goodfellow for the first time at the National Diving Cup in Southend this weekend.

Daley, who won a bronze medal at the 2012 Olympics in London, will also be taking part in the platform competition.

But it is the synchronised competition Daley is most excited by as he begins his preparations for this summer’s Olympic Games in Rio.

“It’s been good training with Dan and I think that it’ll be exciting to get out and do synchro again,” said Daley.

“I haven’t competed in the event since 2014 when I was up there with James [Denny] at the Commonwealth Games.

“But Dan and I know each other well and I think the partnership will work well.

“Getting competition experience under our belts will be great so I’m looking forward to the weekend.”

The competition, which will take place at the Southend Diving Centre at Garon Park, gets underway this afternoon and lasts until Sunday.

Daley will also be joined by the rest of Britain’s best divers including world medalists Jack Laugher, Rebeccca Gallantree and Chris Meads.

At last year’s World Championships, Great Britain secured four individual quota places and one synchro place for Rio while the remaining Olympic places will be up for grabs at the World Cup next month.

But the National Cup will allow National Performance Director Alexei Evangulov to see how the divers are performing at this early stage of the season.

“The British National Diving Cup is a going to be a strong competition and a good opportunity to see where the athletes are ahead of what will be a busy year,” Evangulov said.

“I’m excited to see our divers in a competition format again after a solid block of winter training.

“I know all of the athletes have been working really hard and they will show their development at the weekend.”
