SOUTHEND United’s in-form midfielder Will Atkinson wants to play a key part in keeping the Shrimpers in the running for promotion.

The 27-year-old excelled in Blues’ 2-1 win at Shrewsbury Town on Tuesday as they surged up to seventh in the League One table.

And the energetic former Bradford City man feels added experience has now helped him play more of a pivotal part in the centre of the park.

“I’ve always had lots of energy and was good at cross-country at school even though I hated doing it,” said Atkinson.

“But in the past I think I’ve been guilty of wasting that energy and making runs which I don’t think I really needed to do.

“It’s all about using it in the right way and I think now I’m a bit more experienced that’s what’s happening.

“I was really happy with how Tuesday went and also enjoying my football more than ever at the moment.

“Whether or not I’m in my best ever form I don’t know. That’s up to other people really but I’m just making sure I keep playing well because there’s a lot of competition in midfield and I want to stay in the side.”

Atkinson’s man of the match display at Shrewsbury was heavily praised by boss Phil Brown who likened the midfielder’s endless running to a crazed animal.

But Atkinson, who also bagged the Shrimpers’ first goal at Greenhous Meadow, is now focused on producing another fine performance against Colchester United at Roots Hall this weekend.

“We’re all just thinking about the game on Saturday now and it’s another one we’re all looking forward to,” said Atkinson.

“The game on Boxing Day wasn’t the best match but there was still that extra bite you get in a derby and I’m sure it will be the same on Saturday.

“Hopefully I’ll be selected and it will be great to run out in front of a big crowd like that because it really does make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.

“We’re all on a high after winning on Tuesday as well and we’re all pulling in the same direction.

“But this is another huge game and it’s one we we’re desperate to win.”
