PHIL Ifil opened the scoring for the U’s before Anthony Wordsworth, who is now with Blues, curled home a 20 yard free-kick.

Southend hit back with a Lee Barnard header but were unable to net a late equaliser despite a sustained spell of pressure.

JEAN Francois Christophe claimed a last minute equaliser as Blues bagged a 3-3 draw with the U’s.

Goals from Peter Clarke and Dan Harding put Southend 2-0 in front inside the opening 13 minutes but the U’s hit back with Johnnie Jackson, Mark Yeates and Anthony Wordsworth all scoring.

But Southend replied to secure a late share of the spoils with Christophe claiming what appeared to an own goal after Clarke had flicked on a Kevin Betsy corner.

U’S striker Jamie Cureton bagged a hat-trick in a miserable afternoon for the Shrimpers who were relegated from the Championship at the end of the season.

SHAUN Goater bagged a brace as Blues saw off Colchester 3-1.

Goater opened the scoring after just three minutes before Sam Stockley netted an equaliser from long range.

However, a fine individual effort from Mitchell Cole put Southend back in front before Goater completed the scoring 12 minutes from time.

The victory remains the Shrimpers’ last against their local rivals at Roots Hall.

BLUES surged through to the final of the LDV Vans Trophy with a 1-1 draw against the U’s.

Southend led 3-2 from the first leg at Layer Road but saw that advantage wiped out by an early effort from Kem Izzet.

However, Drewe Broughton’s goal on the stroke of half-time meant it was Steve Tilson’s side who progressed to the final at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.
