SOUTHEND Swifts' three girls’ basketball teams have the opportunity to create history when they take part in the Final Fours play-offs this weekend.

The event, at the National Basketball Performance Centre in Manchester, will see Swifts as the only girls club in the country with teams competing at under 14, 16 and 18 levels.

The semi-finals are on Saturday with the under-14s playing at 10am, the under-18s at 12 noon and the under-16s at 4.15pm.

If all are successful, the finals are on Sunday with the under-16s at 10am, under-14s at 12.15pm and under-18s at 2.30pm.

And the club chairman admits he is very proud of the team’s efforts.

“The whole club is so excited for what will undoubtedly be a superb weekend of junior basketball,” said Paul May. “Our girls’ teams have had an outstanding season but that all now counts for nothing.

“The scoreboard shows 0-0 for every game and it is absolutely winner-takes-all. But, whatever the results, all of our players will relish the experience and camaraderie an event like this brings.”
