SOUTHEND United have missed out on signing goalkeeper Stuart Nelson from Gillingham.

Blues had been hopeful of bringing the 34-year-old shot-stopper to Roots Hall.

But Nelson has now opted to sign a two year deal with the Gills, much to the disappointment of Shrimpers boss Phil Brown.

“Of course it’s a disappointment because Stuart is a very good goalkeeper who we thought we were very close to signing at one stage,” said Brown.

“During our talks he agreed to wanting a new challenge and we thought we had got the deal done.

“But he’s decided to stay with Gillingham now so we will be looking elsewhere for a new goalkeeper.”

Brown has held talks with the agents of two shot-stoppers and has also approached a club in pursuit of another goalkeeper.

“We have a few different goalkeepers on our radar,” confirmed Brown.

“We’re speaking to a few agents and targets but it’s just about making sure we get the timing right.”
