RAYLEIGH Cricket Club’s Saturday League sides ended their weekend with four wins and two defeats.

In the T-Rippon Mid Essex Premier Division, the firsts visited Rettendon who batted first and were 122-2 after 25 overs.

This appeared to put Rayleigh in a strong position but a century from Carl Lees transformed the innings and the home side finished on 346-7, Ian Turnbull taking 3-47.

Ben Francis (78), Joel Barnett (56) and Will Nolde (51) led a valiant attempt to reach the target but the firsts were bowled out for 270 to lose by 76 runs.

In Division Two, the seconds hosted Great Waltham and finished on 191-6 in their 45 overs, Richard Abley taking 4-30.

Steven Lynch (96) led Rayleigh to a five wicket victory.

In Division Five, the thirds travelled to Sandon Sports and batting first scored 221-4 led by Mark Stratton (103 not out) and Callum Ginbey (69).

The visitors were bowled out for 117, Paul Davies taking 4-22.

In Division Seven, Ongar were the visitors to the fourths and batting first scored 191-9, William Wheeler taking 3-40.

In reply Rayleigh totalled 175-8, Mark Bailey (43) and Matt Walker (42) top scoring.

In Division 10, the fifths entertained Great Totham thirds and bowled them out for 151, Alan Brown taking 2-14 and Jobin 2-20.

Duncan Bond (75 not out) and Owen Davies (27) steered the home side to victory by five wickets.

In Division 11, the sixths travelled to Basildon to play Rayleigh Fairview thirds who batted first and at 110-2 looked to be cruising to a high score.

But the introduction of Sabu Sarasan to the attack, taking a miraculous five wickets for six runs reduced the home side to 126 all out.

The target was passed for the loss of six wickets, Dave Turner (40) and Steve Rothon (30) being the main contributors.

The seventh side entertained a strong Brentwood fifths at Blackmore and invited them to bat.

Poor availability meant the sevenths only had seven players with Brentwood lending the hosts three guest players, who evened the contest up considerably. Brentwood scored 224-8, our guests taking five of the wickets.

This score would normally be well out of reach for the sevenths but guests Srini (48 not out) and Rana (43) took Rayleigh to 191-7 to lose by 33 runs.

In the Under-15 South Essex District Cricket Board West League, Rayleigh Eagles batted first against Wickford and scored 96-9, Matthew Bumpus scoring 35 not out. Wickford passed this total in the final over for the loss of four wickets.
