PHIL Brown believes Southend United are in for the toughest pre-season test of his tenure when they host Newcastle United tonight.

Brown expects the Magpies to be close to full strength for this evening’s clash at Roots Hall And the Blues boss is anticipating a stern test against Rafa Benitez’s team, who were relegated from the Premier League last season.

“Since I’ve been here we’ve had some good games in pre-season but I think this one against Newcastle is probably the toughest of the lot,” said Brown, who has been in charge of the Southend since March 2013.

“We’ve had games against Real Madrid C and West Ham United which have been tough but we’re expecting Newcastle to be pretty much at full strength.

“One or two may be missing but it’s going to be a good work-out for us.

“I’m looking forward to the challenge though, especially as I grew up as a Sunderland fan!”
